When can I register my child for the 11+ examination at Wirral Grammar School for Girls?

How can I register my child for the 11+ examination at Wirral Grammar School for Girls?

How do I register my child for the 11+ if I do not live in Wirral?

If applying from Liverpool or Cheshire, you should obtain a preference form from the primary school or your Local Authority. Following the results of the 11+ and by 31 October of Year 6 if you live outside Wirral Borough Council Local Authority region, if you want your child/ward to be considered for a place here you need to contact your Local Authority and complete an application following their procedures, this will then be sent to Wirral Local Authority. If you live outside England, e.g. in Wales you will need to apply online and complete a Wirral Parental Preference Form at www.wirral.gov.uk/schooladmissions

You will need to place Wirral Grammar School for Girls as your first preference on your home Local Authority admissions form.

When is the test for 2025 entry?

The 11+ date for September 2025 is Monday 16 September 2025. Parents/Carers will need to complete and return the Assessment Request form to Wirral Local Authority by 31 May of Year 5. The form is available online at www.wirral.gov.uk/schooladmissions

Where will the test take place?

Wirral Local Authority will notify parents about where the assessment is to be taken.

When will I receive my child’s result?

Results are issued by the Local Authority in mid October.

When will I know if my child has a place?

Places are allocated on 1 March by the Local Authority.

My child has SEN or requires Access Arrangements? What should I do?

If your child has a current EHCP or has any other medical or educational needs that may affect their performance in the assessment, you can request that special arrangements are considered. Parents should complete the Access Arrangements section of the transfer to secondary education form when registering for the assessment.

What if my child is ill on the day of the test?

Children who are unable to sit a test due to illness or absence should contact the local authority as soon as possible and they will be tested later in the Autumn term. Parents should still submit a preference form before 31st October.

What does the test involve?

The questions in the test are designed to see how your child uses different types of reasoning skills and to test their ability in maths. The test is in two separate booklets, each one covering verbal and non-verbal reasoning skills, as well as mathematics. Both tests are timed and consist of multiple choice questions

Are practice papers available?

GL Assessment have readily available familiarisation materials which can be accessed here.

Do you run a familiarisation session?

Yes, we do and this is usually held on a Saturday morning in June. Information, including the date and time are shared with all of the primary schools.

Does the 11+ take account of my child’s age?

Yes, the test scores will be standardised according to age.

Do I need to make Wirral Grammar School for Girls the first preference on the Common Application Form?

Yes. You will need to place Wirral Grammar School for Girls as your first preference.

How do I appeal if my child is unsuccessful?

After 1 March, when places have been allocated, you then have a right to appeal for a place for your child. Appeals are considered by an Independent Appeals Panel. Further information can be found using the link below

How do I apply for an in-year admission?

To apply for assessment in Years 7 – 9 please complete an In Year Transfer for Secondary aged children form from Wirral Borough Council. Please contact the school for information regarding the assessment process.

My child has not reached the grammar standard, can I still apply for a place?

If your child has not reached the standard for grammar school, do not put a grammar school as one of your preferences. A place cannot be allocated and the preference will be withdrawn.

Can I appeal for a grammar place?

After 1st March when places have been allocated, you then have a right to appeal for a place for your child at any secondary school (including grammar schools) in writing, setting out the grounds of your appeal. Appeals are considered by an Independent Appeals Panel established under the Schools Standards and Framework Act 1998.

You do not have to put a grammar school as one of your preferences in order to appeal. Information on how to appeal will be sent with your child’s allocation on 1st March.
