Extra-curricular PE is am important part of our school community with pupils and students competing in a wide variety of sports. We regularly publish updates of their successes and engagement.

A great start to the netball season with a 53-31 win for our U16s in the SnS Netball Cup today! Some lovely flowing play and great defensive tactics!

U13B SnS Netball Shield v Wilmslow

Our U13B team travelled to Wilmslow for their first match in the SnS Shield. It was a very tough first game of the season with Wilmslow taking the victory. Our girls played brilliantly though and kept fighting until the end of the game. Well played girls.

U13A SnS Cup v Bridgewater

It was a tough start to the season for our u13A squad playing against Bridgewater in the SnS Cup! It was a very close game with both teams narrowly taking the lead at different stages! Unfortunately Bridgewater took the lead in the final quarter winning by 4 in the end! All the girls battled to the end and never gave up 💪🏼 huge congratulations to Bonnie, Hettie & Charlotte for receiving POMS 🌟

U19 SnS Cup v Withington

Our U19s travelled to Withington for their first game in the SnS Cup. It was an up and down game with Withington taking the early lead, we then pulled it back to a draw and then up by 5! Withington then went on another good run in the last quarter and took the win. A great squad performance, well played girls.

U12A SnS Cup v Birkenhead

What a way to start their netball journey at WGSG 💪🏼 These wonderful Year 7s played amazingly well against an established, strong Birkenhead team in the 1st round of the sisters in sport cup with their play & teamwork getting better each quarter! Unfortunately Birkenhead School took the win 21-19 but what a fantastic start to the season 👏🏼 So much talent & potential! Well done to you all.

U15 SSMag v Trinity HS

An amazing start to the season for our talented u15 squad. They took on Trinity HS in the School Sports Magazine ending with an 81-6 win for Wirral. The game was played in great spirit throughout, with both teams working hard and showing determination right up to the final whistle. It was a great opportunity for our players to put their training into action, and credit to the opposition for keeping their energy and positivity across all four quarters.

U15B SnS Shield v Stonyhurst

Well done to our U15 SnS Shield squad who played a very tough game v Stonyhurst. There was some brilliant, flowing play down court and our girls showed great resilience in a physical game. Well done to Stonyhurst on the win.

U15 ESFA Cup v The Heath

Congratulations to the U16 ESFA Cup team this afternoon. After a slow start to the game and a few chances for the opposition we managed to take the lead finishing the first half 2-1.

Second half? All gas, no brakes.

Relentless attack. Ruthless finishes.

Final score: 6-3 to us.

A very closely fought match which went goal for goal most of the game! Both teams took the lead at different points of the game but Castell Alun eventually took the win.  Well done to all for a great, competitive match!

U12B SnS Shield v Merchant Taylor’s

Huge congratulations to our amazing Year 7s who won their first netball match 12-2 against Merchant Taylors in the SnS shield! The girls got stronger each quarter and worked really hard throughout! What a great start – well done to you all 👏🏼

ESSA Northwest Relays

Our junior, inter and senior swim teams travelled to Wigan to take part in the ESSA North West relays tonight. It was a great effort by all of our swimmers with some fantastic performances! Well done all.

A huge thank you to the wonderful Mrs Boyle for giving up her evening to drive the minibus for us.

Dave Jeffs Cup – Track and Field

Well done to all of our athletes in years 7 – 10 who competed in the Dave Jeffs Cup at the Oval last night. It was a lovely evening in the sunshine and we were very impressed with our girl’s performance! Well done all! Thanks to Wirral AC for organising. 

U14 SnS Football Cup

A huge win for our U14 squad today finishing 14-0 against The Grange School in the Sisters N Sport Cup! 

The girls played some incredible football with 4 of our girls getting hat tricks to secure our place in the quarter finals against Weatherhead. An amazing performance, well done girls! 

Senior Dance Company London Trip

Our Senior Dance Company travelled to London to participate in the Move It Dance Event. The girls performed in various workshops and showcases and got to experience sessions with some of the best dancers in the business!

Merseyside Schools Indoor Athletics Finals

Alan Bell

Very grateful to have known Alan and coached alongside him for 15 years! His passion and drive for volleyball was infectious. He was instrumental in developing volleyball at WGSG turning it into the highly successful club that it is today. We are thankful for the tournaments he organised and the opportunities he provided for all pupils to play at club, regional and national league level. We will all miss you Alan. Thank you from everyone at Wirral Girls.

Leap dance Festival- School Platform

National Dance Day was held on 29th April and was celebrated by our Year ⅞ Dance Company performing at Leap Dance festival in Liverpool. This was a school event with local primary, secondary and sixth form colleges performing. It was a fantastic evening to celebrate all things dance!

 Great Big Dance Off

Our Year 10 GCSE dancers and mixed select group took part in the Great Big Dance Off competition this April. It was an extremely tough competition with a high standard of dance from schools throughout the North West. We are delighted to share that Year 10 GCSE dancers have been selected to represent the North West in the National Final held in Cheltenham in June. An exceptional performance from both teams!

U15 Wirral Cup v Final Neston

An absolutely phenomenal performance from our U15 squad today in the Wirral Cup final. The girls showed incredible determination and resilience to finish with a 5-1 win, a faultless performance! Well done girls, we are so proud of you!

U15 Merseyside Football Cup

What a week it has been for these girls! Our U15 squad put on a brilliant performance today against Rainford High in the quarter-finals of the Merseyside Cup! 

The girls showed incredible strength, skill and came home with a 5-0 win. We now progress onto the semi-finals against West Kirby. Well done girls you are amazing!

ESSA Track and Field Cup

Yesterday was a great day for our junior and inter athletics teams at the first round of the ESSA track and field cup. Our juniors finished 3rd overall and our inters finished 2nd and qualified for the regional final! Well done girls!

Year 7/8 & 9/10 Tennis v Birkenhead School

Our year 7/8 and 9/10 tennis teams had a lovely afternoon in the sun at Birkenhead School. Lots of great tennis and a team victory for the 9/10/s! Well done to the 7s on their first match!

ESFA National Cup Final

Our U14 football team played Shenfield in the National Final of the ESFA cup at The Hawthorns, the football stadium for West Bromwich Albion Football. It was an amazing experience for the players. It was a great game with Wirral having most of the possession in the first half.  Shenfield took the lead just before half time, Wirral fought back with Amelia getting a cracking goal in the second half.  The game finished 3-1 with Shenfield taking the win. Well done to our girls on an amazing achievement!

U15 Merseyside Cup semi final v West Kirby

Congrats to our U15 Football team who beat West Kirby 3-0 in the Merseyside Cup semi finals today! It was a great game in the sunshine and cracking goal scoring from Tilda!

Year 7/8 & 9/10 Tennis v West Kirby

Well done to our 7/8 and 9/10 tennis players who played a great match v West Kirby today. They’re were some cracking rallies and games that went to the wire- a great afternoon in the sunshine! Well done to West Kirby who won the match overall.

ESAA Regional Track and Field Cup ‘A’ Final 

It was great day at the ‘A’ Regional Final for the ESAA Track and Field Cup for our junior and inter teams today. Lots of great action on the track and in the field with great performances and even some PBs! Well done girls!

U14 SnS National Cup Quarter Final

Year 7 Track and Field Competition

Our year 7s were brilliant at the Wirral School Track and Field event today. It was fab to see so many girls try new events and enjoy new challenges in the sunshine. Well done to all of you.

7/8& 9/10 Tennis v Queens School

We had a very hot tennis match v Queens School this afternoon. Well done to all our players on doing so well in the heat! Our 7/8 team took the win with our 9/10 team narrowly missing out by one game!

Year 9 & 10 Wirral Schools Rounders

We entered 4 teams into the year 9 & 10 Wirral Schools Tournament held at our school! All 4 teams played amazingly well and showed great enthusiasm and team spirit throughout – well done girls. Huge congratulations to our Year 9 A team who finished as the overall winners and a big thank you to all the 6th formers who helped out.

U13 SnS Football Plate National Final

Well done to our fabulous U13 football squads who played in the SnS Final Fours today. We drew the semi final 0-0 and then won on penalties. The final was another nail biter finishing 1-1. Unfortunately we just missed out on penalties in that game but still came home with silver medals and smiling faces!

U14 SnS Football Cup National Final

Huge congratulations to our U14 football squad who became the SnS National Champions at the Final Fours today! 

The girls won the semi final 2-0 with Ella and Tilda getting the goals. 

They then put in a stunning performance in the final winning 5-0!!! Goal scorers were Tilda x 2, Abi x 2, Ella x 1. Congrats to Ella on receiving the well deserved player of the match award!

Wirral School Athletics Competition

We had a great day at the Wirral Schools Athletics Competition at The Oval today. Our junior and inter girls competed in both track and field with some great performances across all events. 

A massive thank you to Liv, Chloe, Lexi, Erin, Bella and Erin – our fantastic year 12 sports leaders who sorted all of the results for us!

Year 7 & 8 Wirral Schools Rounders

We entered 9 teams into the Year 7 & 8 Wirral Schools rounders tournament. All teams played amazingly well showcasing what they have been working hard on in training! We had 3 of our teams make the semi final which is incredible! The Year 8A team finished as runners up in the Year 8 section losing out on the top spot by half a rounder! The Year 7A team finished as the overall winners of the tournament! Congratulations girls and a huge well done to all involved! We are very proud of you all.

Year 9 & 10 Wirral Schools Rounders

Sports Day

We had a great day in the sunshine with all of the girls competing in a wide variety of events to win points for their house.  It was a very closely contested competition with only 3 points separating 1st and 2nd place. 

Congratulations to Unitas for winning the Olivia Gow Sports Day trophy! A huge thank you to our games captains, house captains, sixth form and staff who helped make the day go smoothly and for bringing the energy!!  And a massive thank you to Eve, Lucy and Lucy for coming in to present the trophy.

NW Regional Netball Nationals

We had a great day of netball at Stonyhurst for the NE regional netball qualifiers. Our U14, U16 and U19 teams put in some great performances and had well fought games. Unfortunately there were no qualifying positions today but well done and thank you to everyone who played.

U14 ESFA Cup v Thomas Telford

An excellent performance from our U14 football squad against Thomas Telford School. The girls played some great football and managed to bag a 4-2 win to secure our place in the ESFA quarter finals!

Dance Show

Over 600 students from across all 7 year groups took part in our annual dance show ‘Encore’. The students performed over 3 nights at the Civic Hall in Ellesmere Port and the audience were treated to a medley of different dances including contemporary, street, commercial and musical theatre! The show started with an opening spectacular in the theme of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader, with 66 girls gracing the stage! 

Every form in years 7, 8 and 9 performed a dance that they had learnt in their PE lessons alongside performances from our year 7, 8 and 9 dance clubs, year 7 & 8 dance company, year 9 & 10 dance company, senior dance company and our year 10 and year 11 GCSE groups.  The closing dance was a mesmerising, joyful medley from Mamma Mia performed by our GCSE dancers. A huge thanks to all who supported, watched, helped with costumes and logistics, and a massive special thank you to Mrs Davis and Mrs Rigby for their incredible choreography, creativity and organising!

Wirral Schools Netball Tournament

What a great morning of netball!! Well done to all 10 teams in year 7 & 8 who took part in the Wirral Schools Netball tournament this morning. It was fantastic to see so many of you playing and enjoying yourself. There were great performances from everyone, especially after a tiring week performing in the dance show! 🤩

Well done to our year 7 pink team who finished in 1st place 🥇 and our year 8 blue who finished 2nd 🥈 

A massive thank you to Sophie, Olivia and India in year 10 and Lucy in year 13 for helping to umpire, coach and run the tuck shop – you are wonderful!

Indoor athletics

Well done to our year 7&8 indoor athletics team who competed at the Wirral competition and qualified for the county round! Some very impressive performances on display!

U13 SnS Plate Semi Final

Our brilliant year 8A squad travelled to Bradford to compete in the semi finals of the S&S competition against Woodhouse Grove School this week. It was goal for goal for the majority of the match, however Woodhouse edged ahead in the third quarter and held the lead in until the end resulting in a narrow loss for Wirral. It was a major achievement to make it to the semi finals of a national competition and they can feel proud to count themselves amongst the best school teams in the county. Well done!! 

U14 SnS Plate Semi Final

Congratulations to our very talented U14A squad who beat Royal Worcester in their semi-final today! The team travelled for 3 hours but did not let this deter them. They played some brilliant netball and will now compete in the national finals in Loughborough on Tuesday- good luck! Final score 51-20. 

U14 ESFA v Compton House

A huge well done to our U14 football team who came through a nail biting match to qualify for the semi finals of the cup!  The game finished 4-4 at full time and was 6-6 at extra time meaning we had to go to the dreaded penalties! Luckily our girls kept their nerve and we went through! Well done everyone!

Austria Ski Trip

During half term we travelled to Radstadt in Austria with 78 students for our annual ski trip.  It was a fun-filled week, skiing in several different resorts including Radstadt, Zauchensee, Flachau and Wagrain.  In the evening we visited a thermal spa, went in a skidoo ride and tobogganing, rode the Lucky Flitze, an alpine rollercoaster, and enjoyed a sing-a-long and marshmallows around a campfire.  The girls made excellent progress with their skiing, gaining in confidence and skill as the week went on. Thanks to all for a great week!

Key Stage 3 Trampolining Competition

Well done to Katie, Hollie, Agatha and Daisy – our trampolinists from year 8 & 9 were brilliant at the KS3 trampolining competition at Prenton tonight. Very impressed with their skills!

U13 School Sport Magazine Cup v North Chadderton

Another game today! This time for our talented Year 8 A team. They took on a strong North Chadderton squad in the quarter final of the S&S competition. The team stayed focused throughout and came away with a 30-21 win! They are now through to the semi- finals!

Santa Dash

🌟A huge well done to all of our classes this week for their fabulous efforts in this year’s Santa Dash! We have loved seeing your fantastic outfits and accessories and would like to say a big thank you for all of your donations!

❤️ We have raised over £500 for the CRY charity to help with the amazing work they do!

Boulder Hut Climbing Competition 

A fantastic performance from both of our climbing squads in the school climbing competition last week.

The girls made their way through 15 challenging climbs and showed some incredible skill and resilience! 

Our advanced team scored a total of 325 points and our beginner team scored an impressive 719 (coming 3rd out of all schools) 

Harriet U finished first place in the individual female novice group and Hollie S finished second in the individual female experienced group! 

Well done to all the girls who took part and thank you to Climbing Hut for hosting and organising such a fantastic competition!

Cross Country National Finals

An amazing performance from our senior cross country team today in the ESAA National Cross Country Cup Finals! Our girls absolutely smashed it, finishing 12th in the country 

The girls had an incredible race and showed their remarkable skill, determination and mindset throughout! You did us proud girls!

October/November 2024

U14 SnS Netball Cup v Queens

A very unfortunate loss by 1 goal for the u14 team today in the SnS cup. The team overcame a difficult start to come back from 11 goals down, to narrowly miss out on taking the win. We are very proud of the resilience and determination you showed on court today- well done!

U16 SnS Netball Cup v Kings Macclesfield

Our u16 team were on fire this afternoon against Kings Macc in the @sistersnsport cup with a 49-31 win! A brilliant performance, well done girls!

English Schools Regional Swimming

Huge well done and congratulations to our swimming teams who took part in the ESSA schools qualifiers. We had great swims from our Juniors and Seniors in the heats. Our Inter swim team came 2nd in the freestyle and fourth in the medley relay! Thanks to everyone who competed.

Wirral Netball League

Monday we started the Wirral league! It was a fantastic night with some great netball! Great to see so many girls playing! 

U13 SnS Plate v Birkenhead

The year 8A squad took on local rivals Birkenhead in the second round of the S&S Cup. The closely contested match ended in a win for Wirral progressing them to the next round, well done girls!

U12 SnS Cup v Scarisbrick

Well done to our Year 7 A team who beat Scarisbrick Hall in the 2nd round of the Sisters in Sport cup! A great performance by everyone, well done!

Dance Clubs 

We have had an incredible turn out at our different dance clubs! With over 60 students at year 7 dance club, 50 at year 8 dance club and 62 at year 9 dance club! Just amazing! We have also introduced Senior Dance Company this year, along with our 7/8 and 9/10 Dance Company! We have one busy dance studio! Can’t wait for the Dance Show in February!

Dance Company Auditions

We saw over 110 pupils audition for Dance Company this term. The talent was unbelievable and it was extremely difficult to choose pupils for just 20 spots. A huge congratulations to all pupils involved!

Can you Dance? Dance Convention in Liverpool

We took 30 pupils to the Dance Convention in BT Exhibition centre in the Albert Dock, Liverpool. The pupils took part in master classes throughout the day and watched professional companies and colleges. The girls learnt lots of new styles and had a great time learning from top choreographers. 

Cross Country

Today saw the beginning of the Cross Country season starting off with the first round of ESSA Cross country cup. Both Junior and Inter squads were fantastic and our Inter and Senior squad have qualified for the Region round held in Sedbergh on 6th November. 

U13A School Sport Magazine Cup v Saddleworth

A tough game for our year 8A team in the School Sports Magazine Cup away at Saddleworth. We didn’t take the win today but lots to work and build on.

Merseyside Schools Cross Country

The rain held off for the second  cross country event this week. Our runners had a great race at Camp Hill , Liverpool showing excellent resilience and sportsmanship. Special shout out to Bea who came 1st in the year 10-13 race! Well done girls!

U19 SnS Cup v Birkenhead 

What a game and what a win for our senior squad who beat Birkenhead in the 2nd round of The Sisters and Sport Cup!  The final score was 44-33 – well done girls! Congratulations to Libby and Lucy on receiving POMs.

U12A School Sport Magazine Cup v Merchant Taylors 

Congratulations to our Year 7A team who just won their School Sports Magazine match 26-03 against Merchant Taylors. It’s lovely to see your progress from game to game – keep it up. Congratulations to Hettie, Ava & Charlotte on receiving POMs.

Congratulations to our year 9B team who beat Upton Hall school today in the SnS Bowl competition. A great score and a great performance!

U15 SnS Cup v Cheadle Hulme

The year 10 squad faced a very talented Cheadle Hulme side in the 2nd Round of the SnS Cup today. Despite some lovely passages of play, Cheadle proved tough opposition which resulted in a loss for us unfortunately. Good effort girls!

U12B SnS Netball Bowl v Merchant Taylors

Well done to our Year 7B netballers on their performance today against Merchant Taylor’s in the 2nd round of The Sisters and sport bowl! You played with true grit throughout and it showed in the final score winning 12-07.

Wirral Sports Awards

Huge congratulations to our U14 football team who won Secondary School team of the Year at the Wirral Sports Forum Awards.  The award was given based on their amazing success in several national competitions last year – well done girls!

National Schools Laser Run Finals

A huge well done to Sarah, Evie, Charlotte, Sophie, Elsie, Isabelle and Tommie who took part in the National Schools Laser Run Finals yesterday. The results were:

Yr 7/8: individual gold for Charlotte and team silver. Sophie: individual silver. Yr 11/12/13: individual silver for Tommi (Year 11); individual gold for Evie and silver for Sarah (Year 12); team gold. We are extremely proud of you all – well done!

U13 SnS Shield v Great Sankey

Our year 8B squad travelled to Great Sankey to play in the SnS competition. Although they did not come away with the win, they never stopped playing hard, supporting one another and learning!! Well done everyone!

U14B SnS Shield v Whitby High

Wow! What a game! 🤩 The year 9B team took on Whitby in the SnS national netball competition and only missed out on the win by 2 goals!! Brilliant determination and resilience shown by  the whole team- well done everyone!!

U15 SnS Cup v King’s Chester

Amazing start to the year 10s campaign in the @sistersnsport cup with a 64-38 win over Kings Chester. It was a pleasure to watch the team play.

U19 SnS Netball Cup v The Grange

The U19 team had a convincing win against The Grange in the @sistersnsport cup. 67-21 to Wirral! Well done girls!

U13 SnS Netball Cup v Scarisbrick

The year 8A squad travelled to Southport today to take on Scarisbrick Hall in the @sistersnsport cup. A highly contested match resulted in a 27-30 loss for Wirral – unlucky girls!

U12 SnS Cup v Fallibroome

First match for our Year 7 A squad in the sister in sports cup vs Fallibroome! What a great start with all girls putting in maximum effort and determination to come away with the win 38-2  An excellent performance by every player! Well done to Hettie and Maisy on getting POMs !
