I have Wirral Grammar to thank for my destined career path, though I did not realise it at the time. During my time at Wirral Grammar (1999-2006), I discovered a passion for writing and studying the English Language. I was encouraged at every turn. When I got to sixth form, two teachers in particular invested in my interests: Mrs Simpson and Miss Roche. They encouraged me, gave me the confidence to believe in my abilities and provided constructive feedback every step of the way. I remember Mrs Simpson’s sense of warmth and praise, which spurred me on. I was so interested in the subject that I knew I wanted to carve my career out of my passion for English Language studies.

I achieved an A Grade in my English Language A-Level (the highest award at the time) and attended Chester University to study Communication Studies. One term in, I knew that the course was not my calling – I was missing studying English Language. I was awarded a scholarship to study at Liverpool hope University and spent three happy years learning about psycholinguistics, semantics and English as an additional language. I was fascinated by the human brain and the notion of language acquisition, something I had been introduced to during my A level studies. I achieved a first class BA Hons but decided that I still wasn’t finished with my studies of language acquisition. I applied to undertake my Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).

Fast forward and one decade later, I am still happy with my career choice in Primary Education. I work for the local Oak Trees Multi Academy Trust (MAT), with a great supportive team who continue to support me in continuing my own professional development. I am naturally inquisitive about the pedagogy behind teaching, so this year I have joined a MAT team of ‘Lead Professionals’ who research good practice and disseminate training materials to teachers across the MAT to support them in their professional development.

I am currently studying for my qualification in Senior Leadership, have recently been appointed as a School Governor and am also a Key Stage 2 writing Moderator for Wirral Local Education Authority.

Had it not been for the dedicated teaching staff at Wirral Grammar, I do not think I would have the confidence and ambition that I do now. I embrace every opportunity. If I see an opportunity to learn a new skill, I take it. Wirral Grammar taught me to never become complacent and to continue to push yourself beyond your comfort zone in order to achieve success.
